Everything about Gormenghast totally explained
Gormenghast refers to the books revolving around the
castle Gormenghast, written by
Mervyn Peake.
The
Gormenghast book series consists of three novels. At least two more (tentatively titled
Titus Awakes and
Gormenghast Revisited) were planned but never written. As the castle is the setting of only the first two books, it might be more properly called the Titus series. Planned as a
bildungsroman spanning the hero's life from birth to death, it was cut short by Peake's own untimely death from
Parkinson's Disease. The books are an early influence on the
Mannerpunk subgenre.
Gormenghast (miniseries) was a four-episode mini series produced by the
BBC in 2000.
A short story,
Boy in Darkness (1956), shares the setting of the Gormenghast novels. It was made into a short film by the BBC Drama Lab in 2000.
